Only three stars because it could’ve been shortened a bit. At times, it was dragging, to a point of boring. As a reader born in Kerala, I thought the author captured a little bit of everything including the caste system, naxalites, etc. which I only have the knowledge by hearsay. Overall, a good book. I would recommend it to my children who are born in US, to get a picture of the old india/Kerala which has no resemblances of the modern country/state.

The Covenant of Water is a beautifully written novel that was not the best choice for a busy time. It’s over 700 pages and involves five main characters. They are connected in a small area of India.

It’s mostly a novel of three generations of St. Thomas Christians, many of whom suffer from a strange and fatal aversion to water.

The characters are complicated and mostly loving people who care for others.
I believe I would have rated this higher had I been able to read more steadily.
