It's wonderful and refreshing to see a talented author playing with narrative conventions within a constrained genre like Epic Fantasy. I wouldn't have expected second-person narration to work so well in a novel of this scope, but by casting one of the three viewpoints in that voice Jemisin deftly navigates a fascinating psychological profile. Would have been 4 stars, but beginning and ending were intrepid. Beginning was confusing and the end was abrupt, as if the book got torn at the last pages (if it were a paperback).
Unsure whether to label it as pure SciFi or Scifi with elements of fantasy.
The premises of this story: the human beings and animals are long long ago destroyed by the enraged 'Father Earth' who can no more tolerate the abuses heaped at him and his other creations by human beings. But somehow a few humans surv ...more

Scooped up a digital copy of this on Amazon during a flash sale for a couple of dollars. NKJ was described to by some book loving friends as "Octavia Butler kicked up a notch," which of course was all I needed to hear to add this to my reading list.

Slow at first, but really picked up with the different storylines coming together. Surprising, and unfathomable. I hope that the rest of the books in the series help explain some of the mysteries of the first.
Someday, I will (probably) finish this. I thought I was okay to start it now, but I wasn't. I really should have looked up content warnings before attempting it.
