BR with Chitra.
Was a different sort of book .. sort of YAish..admixed with a murder .
Not the genre I read , but it was getting good reviews on various platforms , and that ..along with the unusual title caught my attention. The cover pic wasn't impressive, but.
Story of an almost abandoned girl who grows up alone in a marsh and survives and educates herself due to sheer presence of mind. I felt bad about her circumstances and ached with her , and even experienced some of her angst and loneliness ...more

5 out of 5 stars.
I love it when a story comes together.
I was afraid to read this book because of ALL the great reviews and the thousands of recommendations. I thought, seriously, there is no way this book is that good, no way it lives up to the hype.
But from the first page, I was drawn in by the hypnotic, lulling writing that was both descriptive and poetic. Then by the heartache. Then by the wild. Then by the heartbreak. Then by the hope. Everything worked together perfectly to keep my nose ...more

Meh. This would make a good Hollywood movie, but as a book, this was okay. The writing style wasn't terrible, but story line was very contrived. The characters seemed like caricatures and the book reads like a cheesy romance novel at times and is very unbelievable. I kept reading because I was curious about the "who dunnit" mystery but the ending fizzled out a bit for me.

Kya (aka: Marsh Girl) raises herself after everyone in the family leaves her. She learns how to read and write and is published as an expert on the Marsh. She's loved two men, one who leaves her to go to collage and one who later winds up dead. She is convicted of the crime and it goes to court. What will the verdict be? You have to read the book to find out. And, there is a twist at the end that I didn't see coming.

I didn't like the characters or plot. The character seemed one dimensional and bland. The plot was very nature based and once a "story" did develop (minority put in jail for crime not committed), it didn't have any good weight or value compared with similar non fiction reads that I enjoyed recently (Just Mercy - Bryan Stevenson, Free Cyntoia - Cyntoia Brown - Long)

Wrestling with myself to give this 5 stars. I believe it's a solid 4.7.
