What I have come to enjoy about Gillian Flynn’s writing with Gone Girl and The Grown Up was missing in her first two novels. The twisted plot and interesting characters seem to be present in all of her works but a larger part of the beginning in both Sharp Objects and Dark Places lacked the hook needed. I read Gone Girl years ago and thought it was pretty decent, but I don't believe I enjoyed it as much as most people. I kept meaning to check out her other works, but I never got around to it until now.
This was a really enjoyable mystery. Every single theory I had ended up being wrong, which I love. I did think the reveal of (view spoiler) was a bit odd, but it did not negatively impact how I felt about the book as a whole.
