I know just about everyone loves this book, but I think it is ridiculously out of touch with real teenagers, so far from reality, and makes a mockery of people who aren't quite normal. I have known a few people, tragically, that have been (view spoiler) and while I understand it affects everyone differently, I can't see it making you forget what sex and masturbation is entirely. I just couldn't connect to any characters in this book. He seemed like a 9 year old.

I really wanted to like this book. And it isn't that the story was bad. It really wasn't. But this is an epistolary novel - and the letters are written by a 15-year-old boy named Charlie who clearly has some issues socializing - like maybe he has Aspergers or something. And Charlie writes like he is about seven years old. It was, at times, painful to read. I loved sweet, sensitive Charlie and was immediately drawn into his world. I normally enjoy epistolary novels. If done well, I feel like it's a great tool to really get inside a character's head. As a reader, I feel a certain guilty pleasure when reading someone's letters. This story was set in the year I graduated high school and the references we quite nostalgic for me. Sweet story with some serious undertones. Great characters. I loved Charlie's book list. A lot of those were my favorites in
