i picked it up to see what the controversy's all about. i fail to be impressed by book I's ability to turn your children into atheists, although the heroine's got a bit more trickster anti-authoritarianism in her than parents desiring docile, unquestioning children might want to hold up as a role model. i enjoyed it, but recommend against finishing when lacking access to transportation to go get the second book.

I'm having a bit of a Golden Compass resurgence, as I just finished the HBO show and rewatched the 2007 movie. I admit I was nervous to reread this because I loved this story so much as a child, but to my relief it holds up today. In fact I know there are themes I did not pick up on as a child that I appreciate as an adult, which to me is the hallmark of great writing. Looking forward to rereading the rest!

4.5 rounded up.
It took me a little bit to really get into the book, but once I did I was hooked. I think Philip Pullman has a magical way with words, and I am really enjoying the ideology that is being presented here. I am immediately starting the next book, and I look forward to seeing what happens.

I read this after watching the movie. I loved Lyra and her school experiences, but I didn't enjoy much more of her adventure. What's all the fuss about?
