Epic in scope with a HUGE cast of characters. A little difficult to keep the characters straight at first, but the reader quickly becomes invested in their lives. I went into this series with relatively high expectations, given its acclaim, and was not disappointed. Martin has constructed a vast geographical and political landscape with the care and attention to detail that befits the story and its characters with their grand scale. I found having viewed the television series beneficial, as the many, many characters' names were already familiar, as were their faces, even when their visual portrayal has differed from their literary descriptions.
