Helene Wecker’s novel about two unusual immigrants is mainly set in New York City around 1900 and she takes you right there. In The Golem and the Jinni, you’ll visit cramped, stuffy tenements as well as stately, airy mansions. You will explore a city that you’ve probably never seen before. Ms. Wecker has a gift for setting. I only wished there would have been a map somewhere in the book to place all the streets and to get a feeling for the distances the characters traveled.

I am so glad this was my first read of 2014. Taken by the cover, and the gorgeous deep blue trim of the pages, I thought I'd give it a try. It hooked me instantly. The author captures the characters brilliantly, the historic scene of an 1899 NYC, and the cultures of the Jewish and Syrian neighborhoods.

Yes, this was a fun book to read. Loved the premise of the book... Golem Meets Jinni...Golem plays hard to get...Jinni falls for Golem. chaos erupts. It's rare that two different cultures are juxtaposed in one novel. I was able to learn a lot of Hebrew and Islamic tales of yore. I never knew what the hell a Golem was, but I want one for Christmas. Yeah, yeah,,, the editor could have shortened it a bit... but none the less it was a very enjoyable read.
