What a cracker!

I was dubious at the start, as it was very dry, and very Victorian, but before too long it had me under its spell. A lot of Dickensian humour (I can see why they were friends), a curly mystery and some fantastic characters. A kick-arse female character (obvs. not Lady Glyde), and some deliciously deplorable villians. I'll admit it has me gripped from about a third of the way through until the end. I can't believe that it took me so long to read this book. The size has always been the issue but I realised now, that it shouldn't be. The language was pretty easy for a classic. So, if this is what stops you from reading it, don't let it stop you any longer!

I found the epistoraly-like narrative slightly disconcerting; the changes in narrators with their own styles of writing. However, other than a slightly unbelievable twist near the end, I thorough enjoyed the story for its genre.
