What a cracker!
I was dubious at the start, as it was very dry, and very Victorian, but before too long it had me under its spell. A lot of Dickensian humour (I can see why they were friends), a curly mystery and some fantastic characters. A kick-arse female character (obvs. not Lady Glyde), and some deliciously deplorable villians. I'll admit it has me gripped from about a third of the way through until the end. So glad that I persisted. ...more

This book was great! I didn't expect it at all, but I really enjoyed this.. Well at least most of it!
The setting was amazing and well described and there are some fantastic characters
My favourite parts was when Marian Halcombe was telling the story. A strong woman in the 19th century England. I would have loved for her to tell the whole story, but of course a man had to be the hero!
In the end I did think the story dragged on a little. I sort of felt like I was being told the same story over and ...more

I can't believe that it took me so long to read this book. The size has always been the issue but I realised now, that it shouldn't be. The language was pretty easy for a classic. So, if this is what stops you from reading it, don't let it stop you any longer!
I found the epistoraly-like narrative slightly disconcerting; the changes in narrators with their own styles of writing. However, other than a slightly unbelievable twist near the end, I thorough enjoyed the story for its genre. ...more
