This was adorable, and just the thing to start the Christmas season. Luther, an accountant, tallies up the expenses for last year's Christmas and is shocked by how much money they spend every year. This year he decides that if he and his wife take a long Caribbean cruise, they'll still spend a lot less than usual. Since their daughter is away in the Peace Corps for a year, they are excited to try something new. Of course, the people around them are confused and even upset. Where will we go on Ch ...more

I guess this was kind of an amusing novel, in a silly kind of way. Luther and Nora decide to skip Christmas because their daughter has gone to Lima and for the first time in 23 years they won't have her there. But the pressure from neighbours, friends, work, shops and everything else means that ultimately, Christmas will win out. Or, should I say, the whole commercial mayhem will win out. Oh, and their spoilt daughter, who wants to bring home a fiance she has only known for a month will win out. ...more

This book was downright offensive. The narrow-minded people in the book just don't even comprehend that anyone might not celebrate Christmas. I got the impression that the author was not even aware that there are people who aren't Christian in the world. That aside, the most horrific thing about the book was the racist couple who kept worrying about how dark-skinned their daughter's boyfriend might be. At the end they are relieved because he isn't that dark!! How can this be acceptable in today' ...more

Mildly entertaining story of a couple who decide NOT to go the traditional route but "skip" Christmas this year. Think they can pull it off? Think again.

Our book club wanted a "light" read for the Holidays, and we certainly got that. Pure mind candy. I think the author gave in to the pleas of his agent/editor to come out with something "for the holiday season." He should have skipped it.

What a totally ridiculous waste of time! Mr. Grisham, please stick with legal thrillers!

The Krank family doesn't want to experience another boring, debt-filled Christmas. Nora and Luther Krank decide not to spend the $6100 that they spent last Christmas and take a Caribbean cruise instead. Luther thinks if he ignores the holiday completely and goes on a cruise instead that it will pass unnoticed. He learns through trials and tribulations that money and crowds and last minute shopping are not at all what Christmas is about. Some of it is downright hilarious and easy to envision.
