This book has been kind of flitting in and out of my consciousness for a few weeks now - you know what I mean? And I'm glad that I finally read it, so maybe now it can just leave me alone. 😂
I really liked this. It felt like a reasonably authentic teenage voice (unlike John Green's teenagers), but although it was fairly short at 208 pages, it still felt a touch too long. I felt a little emotional at the end though, so that's a job well done in my opinion! ...more

3 1/2 stars. I was confused by this book for a decent portion of the beginning, but I liked it enough to continue. The way it is constructed begins to make sense as the plot develops. The narrator has a powerful voice and the structure of the wording is put together well, including some good choices in wording and some awkward spellings and puns. Prompt #25: A debut novel
I skimmed this book back in 9th grade and didn’t particularly like it, so I decided to give it another try now that I’m an adult. Verdict? I can definitely appreciate the writing much more than when I was a 13 year old myself.
Speak is a novel by an adult author trying to put herself back into the shoes of a young girl, and it very much reads like it, so I think it’s best read for other adults who will almost certainly be brought back to ...more
