What Members Thought

This was definitely not for me. I'm not a zombie fiction fan to begin with and read it to fulfill a genre challenge requirement. I went into it with an open mind though because so many people seem to love it. I thought it would be fun, light reading. I couldn't wait to be finished with it! My biggest - and really only - complaint is the writing - it is just abysmal. The plot was barely okay, but I was constantly embarrassed by the grade school quality of the writing and dialogue. Dead Until Dark features Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid in the small southern town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie is a very sweet, but naive, working-class southern girl whose life revolves around her job, small-town gossip, and living with her grandmother until a vampire shows up at the bar and someone starts murdering local girls who sleep with vampires. Sookie has her own supernatural talent. She's psychic and can read other people's thoughts unless she's specifically screening them out. When

Prompt #14: A book set in a restaurant
Was not as impressed by this book as I thought I'd be, but I'm intrigued enough to want to read more. Just wish there weren't so many books in the series! As a side note, keep in mind that this book was published 20 years ago, in 2001, so there are going to be things that haven't aged well: Sookie saying she's not a slut, slut-shaming in general, (view spoiler) ...more

Welcome to the world of Sookie Stackhouse, here's your host the mind reading, vampire saving, innocent and in so many ways naïve Sookie. The first book in the series really is a great gateway into this series and one of the books that really display Sookie for the strengths and weaknesses she has. Bill is kind and caringly protective of her even if he is the reason she is in danger to begin with. An interesting interplay of interactions and a murder that Sookie definitely did not do but is drawn
