To me this book was just ok. It was real slow and not much going on. Based on other reviews I thought this one was going to be better than it was but I guess each person takes away some thing different than the next.
I remember 15 years ago when this book came out. I was young and idealistic and I think any new talked about book piqued my interest. I remember giving it 5 stars and swearing up and down it was an amazing book cover to cover.
Now, read with the eyes of someone older, much more pessimistic and more well-read (at least in volume if not quality), I really didn't enjoy this book. The only truly great thing is the characters. You feel very invested in all of them, whether you like them or not. Howev ...more

Ugh.
I really wanted to love this book. But ugh. Ugh! One-note characters. Way too many nature metaphors. And by the end, I got so annoyed with Sayuri that I just wanted to punch her in the face.
