A novel of PKD that creates another world (nebenwelt) with another reality by changing the 'victorious'es of the world war II. Dick takes WWII as an inflection point among the human history and let Hitler live till 1947, Martin Bormann as the next führer of the german people and so on, and similar to our world next führer is Joseph Goebbels :).

Germany and Japan are two super powers of this "NebenWelt" and the cold war goes on between them; the story in the book is about this struggle; but, for m A novel of PKD that creates another world (nebenwelt) with another reality by changing the 'victorious'es of the world war II. Germany and Japan are two super powers of this "NebenWelt" and the cold war goes on between them; the story in the book is about this struggle; but, for me, the most striking part of the novel was seeing Hermann Göring (chef der Luftwaffe), Baldur von Schirach (reichsjugendführer), Heinrich Himmler (reichsführer SS), Dr. Arthur Seys-Inquart (bundeskanzler der österreich), Adolf Eichmann (SS-führer , sentenced to death in Israel, in our world :) ), Walter Schellenberg (chef der SD und abwehr), reichsadmiral Wilhelm Canaris (also chef der abwehr), and of course Dr. Joseph Goebbels (reichspropagandaminister) live, as they've been resurrected for an alternative history.

I forgot to mention reinhard heydrich (hitler named him as mann mit dem eisernen herzen), whom survived an assasination attemp in Prag but wounded badly and had died after eight days at the age 38, in our world :). He is the one of next generation nazi leader in the book, where the old names are "altparteigenosse".

As a man interested in WWII, it was a very good reading for me. The next reading of this kind will be "Vaterland" by Robert Harris of course.

I put a paragraph from the book that I liked very much;

“...She always liked people to look at her, admire her; anybody. I guess most women are like that. They crave attention all the time. They’re very babyish that way.
He thought, Juliana could never stand being alone; she had to have me around all the time complimenting her. Little kids are that way; they feel if their parents aren’t watching what they do then what they do isn’t real. No doubt she’s got some guy noticing her right now. Telling her how pretty she is. Her legs. Her smooth, flat stomach...”

Second reading of this novel. I could appreciate some of the deeper themes of the book more than first-time around. For a short work it covers a lot of deep issues: the nature of evil; authenticity; and moral responsibility. Although the ending is somewhat disappointing, this is still a major work.

Even though it has won awards & receives "High" praise from all walks of life, I, for one, do not care much for this novel. Personally, I think it's one of his worst.

& I am a huge P.K. Dick fan.

So why the 3-stars? Because it's Philip K. Dick. That's all.

I could go into the plot--alternate history, I Ching's influence on people, the man who wrote a book about the U.S. winning the war (which is fiction in their world's history), the Japanese Overlords, the Nazi Overlords, etc.--but I won't. As I' ...more
