I love this book.

I've just finished it for the third time and it improves on every reading. Of all Dick's works that I'm familiar with it's the one that stands out as belonging to, perhaps even establishing, its own category. How does one categorise VALIS? Science fiction? Autobiography? Documentary? It's all those things.

To understand VALIS (or at least meet it halfway) it's necessary to know that beginning on 2nd March 1974, Philip K Dick had what we'd call today a 'religious experience'. VAL

This novel is one of Dick's attempts to make some sort of sense of his mystical experiences from the early 70s. The tone in the first section is quite light, and includes some of Dick's funniest writing. The reader is drawn into the protaganist's attempts to make sense of his life as he jumps from one theory to the next as an explanation. The dialogue is sharp and witty, and this book never loses any of its appeal even after multiple readings. ...more
