The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers go cyberpunk. All that's missing is Fat Freddy's cat.
No, really, that's the best way to describe "A Scanner Darkly". It's half a bleakly hilarious insider satire of 1970's stoner culture, half a convincing portrait of a near-future high-tech surveillance state... kinda like the main character's double life as a cop and a drug dealer whose wares cause split personality disorder in users.

PKD is one of my favorite authors, but this was a very tough read for me. The plot was great; I connected with the characters; etc… In other words, I cannot and will not criticize this book. Guess it was just hard reading about Bob/Fred/Bruce’s decent into an addiction and the final outcome. Liked the ending though.
