I feel something special for this book, although it's not a book you would call perfect or extraordinary. So far Throne of Glass is a pretty basic novel; you would find similar books out there. Yet it has its charming--the characters. No matter how simple and first-book-on-a-series-like they can be, you still find good potential for the follow-ups.

I loved Celaena

I loved Celaena Sardothien. But she's not the girl the blurb sold me. Let's see, Adarlan's Assassin is stunning and terribly gorgeous. Yet she's far from being the Greatest Assassin Adarlan's ever seen. I hate how her infamous habilities and fighting skills are always missing in the battlefield. Celaena sometimes shows she's good, but she better work out if she wants to reach the level she used to be on. However, I loved her character. Her prsonality, mostly, because I'm so used to reading about shy female characters than having someone like Celaena--a crazy-ass sarcastic piece of s***--surprised me. Her ego is huge, and she loves herself and puts herself first.

"My name is Celaena Sardothien," she whispered. "But it makes no difference if my name's Celaena of Lillian or Bitch, because I'd still beat you, no matter what you call me."

Dorian and Chaol are best friends, Heir to the Throne and Captain of the Guard. The first one was the typical sassy male character every YA book has; the latter is more like a mysterious guy. (Chaol, *heart eyes*) I appreciate the author didn't put them into a needless love triangle. Both Chaol an Dorian felt attracted to the young assassin, but neither made a big deal about it. Instead, Dorian and Celaena mutually dediced to break things up after dating for a bit. That showed they were mature, and I liked it, mostly because they're just friends now. So, the girl doesn't fall in love so suddenly in this book.

The world-building was okay. I'm such a sucker for YA High Fantasy, and it's always hard to find a book that pleases me in that genre. My only issue with it was that SJM barely shows what happens with it. We have an assassin summoned to the Glass Castle to fight for her freedom. A evil creature is getting rid of some of the contestants, so she must find out what that is before she becomes one of the dead I loved everything related to the Wyrd marks and Queen Elena. I only wish we had more about it, because the book mostly shows Celaena enjoying life at the Castle and getting beautiful and expensive gowns and flirting with Dorian and Chaol. The competition itself became tedious at some point because it was like a routine. I think SJM's problem is with characterization and development of the plot.

So three stars. I liked it. I enjoyed it a lot, but some things could have been better. With the required development Maas could do great things with this series. I really hope so. ...more
