Coraline, you're the bravest of them all.

a (mostly) one day read!! I love this story, truly truly. I used to watch the movie like twice a day as a kid, which is ironic because now I actively avoid any show/movie with anything too serious or scary because I have ✨️✨️anxiety✨️✨️ and will ✨️✨️✨️✨️spontaneously self combust✨️✨️✨️✨️ upon viewing (i only watch cartoons cuz anything else is too much for me lol). I also really resented the book when I was first made to read it in elementary school becau

Okay this was definitely a spooky October read! I’m glad to have gotten to this one (despite midterm season). The movie never really scared me much as a kid, but I really should have been reading the book — I think it would have been an even better experience for 8-year-old-me. Scary, but also just a really good book.

Also, this was actually my first time fully listening to an audiobook, and it was a surprisingly pleasant experience. I haven’t always found audiobooks to be for me (ie. I’m an ext

Coraline is a cornerstone of children's horror for a reason. It's really fucking good. The best children's stories respect their audience rather than pander to them and you can tell that Gaiman put in the work to craft a story that took children and their fears seriously.

The heart of this story is its titular protagonist Coraline Jones. She's incredibly clever and perceptive but never jarringly mature. I equally detest precocious child characters boringly rendered as hyper-competent pseudo-adult

Not gonna lie, I am a bit sick of children’s literature but this was a good one. It’s creepy and disturbing which fits the vibes for October. After reading the bonus content and finishing the book, I can see why kids see this more as an adventure novel than a horror novel but I did get scared at some parts (the other dad in the cellar thing was spooky). It kind of gives the same energy as Alice in Wonderland now that I think of it.

I know the book is (almost) always better than the movie but it’s really hard to beat stop-motion clay animation and the book somehow continues to be better even if it doesn’t have Whybe.
