Honestly, this is high on my top historical fiction list. Sadeqa is easily one of the best modern HF writers. She brings so much life and light to unsung Black figures and it’s always a joy cracking open one of her books! Y’all are gonna love this one.

Sooooo I absolutely LOVED the writing style for this book .. it was so easy to follow & I wasn’t confused. It was told from two different women of color POV during the 1950s .. & focused heavily on all the challenges we as black women faced & are still facing today .. in 2023! I learned so much from this book & I think everyone should read it. My favorite part was the authors note at the end.

This historical fiction piece made me a believer in Johnson’s pen! Her ability to skillfully develop characters & masterful ability to tell their stories will have you enthralled page after page. The way she intertwined two different women’s life journeys filled with so much complexity made me want to read anything written by her!

This is historical fiction done right! Sadeqa truly has some magic in that pen of hers. This was brilliant, heartbreaking, and so well done. The dual POVs and how they end up intertwined was perfect. This was a thoughtful exploration of Black womanhood in the 1950’s, touching on some things I knew existed, but hadn’t take time to ponder how it would have played out back then.
To conclude, I’ll read anything Sadeqa Johnson writes! ❤️
