EDIT: Conflicted because I SO wanted to love this book, but only really kind of liked it (not enough to love it). I loved Evelyn and Harry’s undying friendship the most and liked how some of the characters were really layered and complex (I both loved and really disliked Evelyn and Celia as characters), but it still just felt like the story was missing something?? Monique is a reporter that, to her surprise, has been specifically requested by famous Hollywood actress, Evelyn Hugo to cover the story of her latest charity donation. Yet, when Monique gets there, she quickly discovers a short piece on Evelyn is not what the star had in mind. Instead, Evelyn wants Monique to write her biography. As Evelyn recounts her life as an actress in the mid-late 1900s, a life that is the complete juxtaposition to the story the media would have you believe is (4.5 stars.)

The true story of Evelyn is one of determination, deception, heart break, and secrets Evelyn would do anything to protect. But there's one secret she has to let go, that being why she specifically wanted Monique to cover her story, and that secret could destroy everything.

When purely looking at Evelyn’s story, it’s positively fantastic. It’s driven by a conventionally unlikable woman that you can't help but love and you want to see succeed in the end. There's a great demonstration of how the media can twist anything, and how nothing is truly as it seems at first glance, and it's all tied up with the neat bow that is the beautiful friendship between Evelyn and Harry and Evelyn's true love story. There’s an incredible discussion of race, heritage, sexuality, and the sacrifices one has to make to get what they want, and the feeling of regret once you finally get it and realize it wasn’t worth what you destroyed. Evelyn’s Story is one of triumph and disaster, cunning and self sabotage, lusting for attention and finally not giving a crap what people think. It’s a story of a woman who achieves everything she hopes for careerwise, and has lost everything over time in her personal life. On this level, the novel is stunning... It’s the addition of Monique that is my only real qualm.

Honestly, I don't think Monique was a totally necessary piece to the story, even though she’s our narrator. Evelyn’s story is good enough to stand on its own, and if you remove Monique's sections from the novel, nothing really changes. Sure, the ending isn't as dramatic, but it's dramatic in regards to Monique. Evelyn's story remains just as powerful if Monique isn't there. It's hard to explain without spoiling, but I really don't think we needed Monique to be a part of the story.

The formatting of the novel makes it feel like Evelyn is the protagonist, not Monique, and I didn't feel like I knew enough about Monique to care about her. Quite frankly, I was more annoyed than anything when the novel would break from Evelyn's story to give us a little update on Monique, which in theory was the author's way of getting us to be invested in Monique. I guess there's no way for Monique to win with me. It just felt so... unnecessary to include her. Just frame the beginning of the novel a bit differently and you could still have the same story, hit just as well, and cut out Monique entirely. Perhaps if I was in more of an analytical mood I could tease out more of the discrete meanings of Monique being included outside of us readers seeing how Evelyn's story impacted Monique and helped her become a stronger person... that and The ending of Evelyn’s story. I don’t know.

Maybe I would’ve liked it more if it was framed like Frankenstein: narrator in the beginning, narrator in the end, cut out insertions in the middle. Maybe I wouldn’t though. It’s not enough to prevent me from loving this book though. ...more

A story about the pains of being a member of the LGBTQ community, the stigma around it, the discrimination and judgement when you don’t fit into the societal standard of ‘normal’. The sacrifice and pain to make it to stardom and the different kinds of love you experience in your life. Evelyn’s story was really heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK I WOULD MARRY IT IF I COULD!!! i waited so long to read it and i’m so angry that i did that bc i was seriously missing out on one of the best books ever known to the world. evelyn hugo’s story is one to be classified as sad, beautiful, tragic, as miss taylor swift would say.
