This is exactly the type of book I was looking for in my Read around the World challenge. Assia Djebar writes so vulnerably about the friends and colleagues lost during Algeria's fight for independence from France, some assassinated and some lost to ravenous diseases. She begins her narrative with the appearance of 3 lost friends in her room, all who had been assassinated in 1993. She is haunted by them in the daylight and tells of their last day.
