look, i get that this is a YA series and maybe i am growing out of YA (although i still read + enjoy it from time to time) but i swear, this read as if it was written for middle grade. the writing is genuinely some "cow jumped over the moon" type sh*t—incredibly plain, uninteresting, and deeply juvenile.

Re-read 10/24/23: HOW IS THIS BOOK SO GOOD???? HOW IS EVERYTHING STEPHANIE GARBER PRODUCES PURE MAGIC?!???

4.5 stars! I loved this a lot, but I had a difficult time getting into it at first. However, the last half of the book was amazing, and I cannot wait to read The Ballad of Never After.

Edit 5/23/23: wow. what a lackluster review I wrote. I hate it. But am I going to write a new one? Absolutely not. Instead I'm going to add a little playlist because I'm way too lazy to write a full review.

wow, this was actually so so good!! i don't know what i was expecting going into this because i hadn't heard much about it, so i went in pretty blind. i was pleasantly surprised! i realized midway through this is a spinoff of caraval, so i am beyond excited to read that series.

Proud to say I devoured this book in one sitting. Annoyed that I didn't start this any sooner. Promoting Jacks on the ever-growing list of hot, fictional men. He just gets better and better.
