A literal masterpiece. This book stabbed me in the chest and twisted the knife about a thousand times. I feel sick. I am deceased and require financial compensation. Read this if you like to suffer😭♥️

This is not just a romance. The devastating themes in this are REAL LIFE and that is what makes it so much more emotional. War, hope, corruption, patriarchy, loss, grief, love. The way history never gets it quite right.

I was introduced to Alchemised through the news that a Draco/Herminoe fanfiction was being rewritten and traditionally published. I was ecstatic at this news because there are tons of fanfiction writers out there who have a genuine writing talent and deserve a chance. I was introduced to Alchemised through the news that a Draco/Herminoe fanfiction was being rewritten and traditionally published. I was ecstatic at this news because there are tons of fanfiction writers out there who have a genuine writing talent and deserve a chance. After the first announcement, I set out to find the original fanfiction and save it, as an original fanfiction story cannot stay on the internet if it is rewritten/published. Once I saved the original fanfiction, I had intended to read the fanfiction first. However, due to life…. Well life-ing….I never got around to it. I’m going to be honest, when the book was released, there were a handful of people on TikTok who were trying to “prepare” readers by talking about how it was “much darker” than other creators were describing it. It was for this reason that I hesitated to read it for a while. I was afraid that it was going to be so graphic that I couldn’t handle it or would grow so uncomfortable that I would be unable to finish it. Eventually, I gave it and took the plunge, and I am so happy I did. SO far… this book is my top read for the year, purely because of how complex, thought-provoking, and gut-wrenchingly emotional it gets.

Character (or group) Analysis:

WOW! Helena Marino is my ideal female protagonist. She is strong both physically and emotionally. She loves deeply and fights intensely. Watching a girl who has lost everything while trying to rediscover all she has lost was so captivating for me. I feel that readers must understand that the alchemy/magic system is unique and set apart from the HP universe (as it should be). You also become more familiar with this system as you read the book. I personally am grateful that we are introduced to Helena straight away and that the author chose to worldbuild throughout the story rather than at the start of the book. This allowed me to latch onto Helena and grow to care for her. I felt the shift back in time to be a little daunting at first, purely because I had grown so attached to Helena and Ferron that It took me a little bit to warm up to Luc, Lila, and Soren. SenLinYu masterfully continues to tell Helena and Farron’s story even from the past, and manages to make their story even more heartbreaking as you read. This is because we begin to see how they were more than just past ‘classmates’, they had grown far closer to the point of lovers. This makes the moments at the start of the book that much more devastating.

Kaine Ferron is a complex character, one who I would argue is truly a morally dark grey character. He cares far deeper than you realize at the start and wants the best for those he loves, but he had accepted (what he believed) was his fate. His love and care for Helena was so deep and complex that it has left an impression on me that will make it hard for other books to replicate or fill.

The Guilds are undoubtedly the antagonists of this story. The atrocities that they initiate and participate in throughout the book make this unmistakable. But I must comment the author for writing a story that highlights both sides of the war in such detail that we as the reader. There was a moment in the story where Kaine was discussing how the guilds were treated early on by those who had established themselves within society. He talked about how the guilds were never taken seriously even when new metals were created. It opened my eyes as to how a series of actions over the course of time can lead a group of people to go so far as to side with a maniac just go be seen and established.

The Order of the Eternal Flame was described by pre memories Helena as a group who were only good and had only pure intentions. However one of the most fascinating things for me to read was how a group that one side sees as “only good” can also make not so good decisions and is just as vulnerable to corruption as the antagonist. I also was heartbroken when Luc “turned” from Helena due to her “actions” but was incredibly surprised and satisfied at how it was handled.

By the end, this book had me pondering the dark side of war and the painful life it leaves in its wake. I found the ending satisfying but was also left with a desire to read more from Kaine and Helena’s daughter and her desire for the truth to be revealed. ...more

Heartbreaking, haunting, and devastatingly beautiful. My most anticipated release of 2025 by FAR exceeded my expectations. The world-building was immersive, the storytelling was imaginative and raw. I feel empty and wistful and generally awestruck; will need a moment to recover but I also can’t wait to read it all over again.

Ok… lots of thoughts

I read manacled a couple years ago and it was my top read of that year. I love Harry Potter and dramoine.

I do feel like I love manacled more, but also just need to show some love for the author.
