This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Predictable but I’m glad it was fast paced. I didn’t enjoy about 65% of this book, so 2 stars it is. I couldn’t get into the romance between Rune and Gideon until the very end. It felt pretty surface level for me and when it was starting to get deep, the description was more tell and less show, which also took me out of the moment.

I know fantasy isn’t believable or realistic in the first place… but some situations that our main couple were put in as well as how they reacted in those situations Predictable but I’m glad it was fast paced. I didn’t enjoy about 65% of this book, so 2 stars it is. I couldn’t get into the romance between Rune and Gideon until the very end. It felt pretty surface level for me and when it was starting to get deep, the description was more tell and less show, which also took me out of the moment.

I know fantasy isn’t believable or realistic in the first place… but some situations that our main couple were put in as well as how they reacted in those situations just annoyed the hell out of me. Also there are random coincidental situations that leave me going… wtf????

Ex: In Chapter 33, the couple are supposed to be rescuing a captured witch child… yet they’re in the library FINALLY talking about their feelings and snogging… bro??? READ THE ROOM. you shoulda done this AT HOME (and yes they had moments at his home before this but NAHH, intense situations are THE PERFECT backdrop to talk out their emotions…)

Another time: they’re being chased by the enemy and they randomly jump onto a COMPLETELY empty train and just start shagging…. up…and…down the halls…like this is so random for the author to write but she needed to write that semi-smut in there SOMEWHERE, AMIRITEE gUysyyyyss??? (I’m losing my mind I’m sorry)

Good stuff/Moments that gagged me:

- Rune killed that SoB Prince!! YAS GIRLIE, power to YOUU. That was quite satisfying.

- We discover that Juniper had, in fact, tried to look for Harrow and presently begged Rune to save Harrow when she was taken. (Ngl, I cared more about this relationship/friendship than Rune’s and Gideons 😭😭 is that bad???)

- We got some gay representation!! HELLO #HappyPride Antonio and Bart were a little random for me. They were just plopped into the middle of a war, but glad they helped save the day along with Rune/Gideon’s gang

- When Rune died, I knew someone was going to use Cressida to resurrect her, but I totally didn’t piece together the whole “An Ancient is among us” story and BAM IT WAS SERAPHINE as that Ancient named Wisdom that helped Rune.

Overall, not my favorite but wanted to finish for book club! ...more

DNF @56%. I loved, I mean LOVED Heartless Hunter. I think it was so well done, well written, great characters, great plot, excellent slow burn enemies to lovers. But if I need to read one more page in Rebel Witch where one of the two main characters has ANOTHER inner monologue about how they need to make sure they are the one to betray the other first; I think I might scream. I adore this duology. Heartless Hunter was one of my favorite reads last year, and Rebel Witch is on the list for this year. It’s so well written; the plot is fast-paced and filled with deception and betrayals, the magic is unique, the war between witches and witch hunters is high stakes, and the forced proximity, forbidden love is excellent. This is enemies to lovers done right. Gideon is a witch hunter and Rune is a witch. They are supposed to hate each other, but something keeps drawing them ...more
