I'm torn.
I really wanted to love this, but a lot of the writing felt sloppy.
I enjoyed the training and the banter with Thea and her pals but when it came to the romance.
Blah.
The smut wasn't well written.
A few times it came out of nowhere . Like the forest scene. How did we get there?
Then the end was not it for me.

This was really good, and much better towards the end. It’s an age gap, reluctant traveling companions to lovers, training trope, found family and secret powers trope story. Althea wants to be a warrior even they women warriors are not allowed. When she gets the chance to train, she is hazed and has to work harder to be accepted. She falls for one of the best warriors who tries to keep her safe as he falls for her. I look forward to how the rest of the series develops.

I knew I was gonna vibe with Althea the second I read “Thea didn’t yield a step despite what she saw in his eyes.” Like YES queen, we LOVE a bitch who does not mf-ing YIELD. She’s basically stomping through a man’s world with zero intention of playing nice, and I live for it. That said, it’s got a bit of First Book Syndrome™—worldbuilding, lore dumps, and setup slowing the tempo here and there—but honestly, that groundwork feels like loaded ammo for the rest of the series.
