City of Thieves was the January '22 selection for our Get Lit book discussion group. The book is set during the Nazi's siege of Leningrad. The novel begins with the arrest of the narrator, Lev Beniov he finds himself imprisoned with Kolya, a boastful, yet charming Red Army deserter. Offered a chance to avoid execution, the pair are set the ridiculous task of finding a dozen eggs for a Soviet Colonel who wants to have a wedding cake baked for his daughter.
