There are multiple stories included in this collection, and some of the fairy tales are quite charming, and written in classic fairy tale style. I enjoyed “Spyridon and Secunda.” Feeding hot crossed buns to the fae? Seas in the land of faerie that are made of orange juice? Cute(!) and kids in the age group would love it! “A Tale of Sibling Rivalry” was another delight with three sisters, a spinner, a weaver and a seamstress, all vying for the hand of a prince. The stories where author JR Gibson sticks to traditional fairy tale style are lovely and I feel would definitely be enjoyed by readers in the age group.

However, I question the decision to insert present-day polarizing politics into a children’s book marketed towards very young readers without disclosing that this is what the book in fact contains. When a parent purchases a book of fairy tales for their 5-year-old, they want fairy tales and 5-year-old appropriate stories, not polarized political content, including MAGA, and “we’re going to build a wall with Mexico, and Mexico is going to pay for it.” While the author has numerous charming fairy tales included, there are also long-winded political screeds throughout the book that would not only go over the heads of five-year-old readers, but would be completely uninteresting to them. This is unfortunately off-putting in a book that is being marketed to 5-7-year-old children, as fairy tales, and detracts from the other fine fairy tales in the collection.

”And Bamzooki told them all about his grand plans for the dwarves living in the North of England including “Flatlining” (making sure they received the same amount of government support as southern dwarves), a Dwarf College (to teach dwarves on the dole new employability skills), a new Ministry for Northern Dwarf Affairs, plans for an invisible barrier in the channel to stop goblin immigration so that Northern dwarves wouldn’t lose their jobs, tariffs on the Mongol Empire to stop cheaply made goods flooding in, unfunded tax cuts, cutting down on environmental targets that ensured all wizards used friendly forms of magical transport such as reclaimed wood broomsticks and organic cotton magic carpets (which weren’t affordable to a lot of wizards, let alone dwarves). After he had finished, Wizard Bamzooki proudly announced he would “Make Magic Great Again!” 3/5 stars
