This collection of fairy tales by JR Gibson combines classic fairy tale style with clip art style illustrations and political messaging. As an adult reader, I enjoyed many of the fairy tales. There are many charming fairy tale elements—dresses made of different materials, curses and stolen babies and fairies. I loved the story of the deacon and his daughter Selena and her fairy figurine. I loved the story of the deacon and his daughter Selena and her fairy figurine. I thought there were some good lessons in the fairy tales, like the tale about stubbornness and not holding grudges in the tale of Maurice, Sophie and the spat they held onto from their school days that threatened to erode their marriage.

When I think about how to rate this book, where I struggle is that while I can enjoy parts of it as an adult reader, the book’s marketing material states both on the Amazon page and in the subtitle that it is a book of fairy tales intended for five-year-old readers.

There are multiple elements about the book that do not make it suitable for readers that young and are off topic to the book’s stated content of “fairy tales” in particular, divisive 2024 political messaging, including MAGA and talk of building a barrier across the English Channel to keep the goblins out. Language choices and writing style are not on a level for 5-year-old readers. Numerous sections of the book contain subject matter that wouldn’t be of interest to a child in that age range or hold their attention, such as infidelity, or complex political issues.
