I am really enjoying the captivating characters and intense romantic suspense storylines in the Arresting Onyx series! When Shea spots her hot musician ex playing in a bar, her first impulse is to walk away. Trevor cheated on her and no way is she giving him a second chance. But after he defends her from a creep, he begs her for a second chance… and tells her that things back then weren’t what they seemed.

I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

To be honest, I'm not the main audience of these types of books and although I have read romance in the past, Jilly Cooper being one particular author, they are not my typical go to.

So, the usual tropes are there: Handsome bad boy, beautiful heroine who is shy, sassy, smart and red hot in the bedroom, mysterious past, a past history and a situation that brings them together etc etc. However, what Amber Daulton manages to do is bring everything to I received an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

To be honest, I'm not the main audience of these types of books and although I have read romance in the past, Jilly Cooper being one particular author, they are not my typical go to.

So, the usual tropes are there: Handsome bad boy, beautiful heroine who is shy, sassy, smart and red hot in the bedroom, mysterious past, a past history and a situation that brings them together etc etc. However, what Amber Daulton manages to do is bring everything together in an exciting way. Her writing is fantastic and the scenes and dialogue are well written.

The plot kicks off with the MC, Shea O'Bannon in a bar with a coworker who wants to get in her pants but is a bit too forceful about it. In the bar, her ex is singing and she longs for him. The coworker makes a move and the hero rescues our heroine. We find out that she called it off when she caught him in a compromising situation with Alyson, the wife of the D.A., who fast becomes Shea's primary antagonist. Of course, it was a misunderstanding and both Trevor and Shea start a relationship, only for things to unravel as she questions certain aspects of his life.

The bitchy Alyson was by far my favourite character, every time she appeared in the novel, I found myself grinning. She's one woman who is fun, confident, she holds herself well and doesn't seem to have a care in the world due to her husband's wealth and influence. I really liked the writing here, especially how she always manages to get under the MC's skin. I won't go into spoilers, but it was interesting to see another side of her, later in the story.

Now, for what we came for: The love scenes. There were a few and they were extremely well written. You could feel the passion between the characters and they are quite erotic. The first one is what I assume to be a typical trope: Stormy, MC is wet so needs a shower - removes her clothes and he impresses by cooking dinner. The other scenes were different, so it was not a case of rinse and repeat.

This is my first book in the Arresting Onyx, so if you are long term readers, it's good to know that characters from the previous books drop in to tie up the universe. But if you are also a first time reader, like me, then you'll be interested to know that it stands as a standalone too and it's not necessary to have read the previous books and the story is self-contained.

There was nothing I can say I disliked. The pace is excellent and when reading, I kept turning the page. The HR side plot was also interesting to me. I was expecting more drama and the resolution was surprisingly realistic, which TBH, was refreshing.

If you are lovers of romance with well written love scenes and drama, then this is the book for you. It does exactly what it says on the tin! ...more
