This was a fun and different pace for a medieval story. It kind of reminds me of the style of Chaucer, with a lot of humorous and deceptive chicanery going around. It is fictional, of course, but at times, it does feel like a lighthearted story that could have really existed in an actual English town-- or any medieval land for that matter. Apothecary Inc was a book that grew on me the more I read. It starts off introducing us to the main character, Wilmot, a peasant and a freeman, who is persuaded by a monk to become indentured to a wealthy spice merchant named Kavalaris to learn his medical secrets, so the church can benefit and help the poor, seeing as Kavalaris tends to use his knowledge for his own benefit. I’ve never been a fan of books set in medieval times — but seeing the world through the main character’s perspective changed that. The story explores how peasants suffer under a ruthless, zero-sum power game, and follows the protagonist’s attempt to unite the powerless classes in a collective fight against their masters to reclaim their freedom.
