A tricky one to review, this one, because it’s not a single novel or even a collection of short stores. There are a few self-contained stories, but a large portion of the book serves, essentially, as an advertisement for his other books in the series. This is not something I have come across before and I don’t think it makes sense to try to review them individually. Instead, I will look at each of book’s different sections/styles in a more general way.

My favourite of the actual short stories was the second one, as I felt that had a more interesting combination of action and interpersonal narrative than others, particularly the first one.

The extracts were a highly effective approach, for me. Certainly, in most cases, by the end I was hooked and wanted to know more, which I guess is the point.

Illustrations are not my thing, personally, so I can’t really comment on their effectiveness, but they appeared to be well done, and it’s an intriguing way to perhaps grab a different kind of audience.

Some of the 100-word stories worked really well, while others felt more like story ideas than actual stories, but many of the latter were strong enough to be worth developing.

The one downside to this book, which the even author acknowledges in its pages, is that this book focuses almost exclusively on just 1 main character, “Nonstop”. From what this book tells me, the series has 3 other lead characters – Skyde, Varrage and Krork. As an advert for the series, I think a broader range of stories might have been more effective. It may be that I would have latched onto Skyde a bit more readily, and a full story with her at its heart might have made me more likely to give the series a go.

Overall, the concept of these interdimensional bleed zones gives the author the freedom to express a seemingly boundless imagination, bringing the most absurd ideas to life in a fun and entertaining way. If you like your sci-fi fast paced and filled with utterly bonkers ideas, I’d recommend giving this a read. ...more
