I read this book on my tablet using the Kindle app.
To start this review, I must say that I am greatly impressed and amazed by the story. You may read from the blurb that this is a "dark version" of Harry Potter, but saying that understates the story we have in front of us.
It's true that the first book of this series takes place during Sebastian's first year at the Academy for Alphas (Alphas are an evolved form of humanity with amazing powers, divided into four different clusters). Sebastian is f ...more

I reviewed this book a tear or so ago and at the time called out a few technical glitches I thought needed cleaning up. Since then, the author has redone the editing, I've read the new edition, and am delighted to say things look and read so much better to me now.
This is a YA magic-school story with a conflicted main character named Seb, friendships and enemies, snappy pacing, lots of action and intrigue.

The setting of “The Hybrid” is a dark future world where some humans have evolved into alphas. Sebastian Parker is one of them: But his abusive and oppressive childhood is about to change. At 13 all alphas must test to see if they are Light or Dark, and then sorted into one of the 4 core duties. Seb, it turns out, is a ‘Hybrid’ or more specifically, a quad-brid: he fits into all four cores. The ‘healers’, ‘conjurers’, ‘teleks’ and the ‘necros’. But which one fits him? He chooses to join the necr

The Hybrid by E.K. Frances is an entertaining read from the first-person, present-tense perspective. We follow Sebastian Parker, a teenager enrolled in the Academy, where he's a Hybrid and Necros (evil and supposed to kill). We encounter other characters like Elijah Neptune as the story is further told. There are mentions of many daily interactions with the other students who are different from regular humans in the future and have special powers like popping (teleporting). Also, they are trying

Very good, engaging reading. It is definitely dark, as the author, E.K. Frances describes, but more interesting and not the entire focus of the story.
Besides the nature of a main character that does not understand who or what he really is, it is the unseen politics and shifting positions of the other characters around him and their varying allegiances is what keeps you reading.

The Hybrid is the story of Sebastian, a teenager sent to an academy where he must choose which school to join. His powers mark him as a ‘Hybrid,’ meaning he could belong to all four cores: "healers", "conjurers", "teleks", and "necros." Thanks to his father's bullying, Sebastian joins the necros. What follows is a series of betrayals and harsh life lessons. This story seems heavily influenced by properties like the X-Men (specifically the early film adaptations) and Harry Potter. The story is a

Sebastian Parker is a thirteen-year-old “alpha” who wants nothing more than to be a healer, but his life changes forever after joining the Academy and discovering that he is not like the other students.
The Hybrid introduces readers to Sebastian Parker, a thirteen-year-old boy living with his father after the death of his mother and brother. Like his father, Sebastian is an alpha, someone who has developed special abilities that are like ...more
