[close] I saw this one all over black queer book tok a month ago and I wanted to read it. From the reviews I have seen this is either going to make us roll our eyes, laugh, cry, or clutch our pearls. I wanted to pick a romance that wasn't a typical tropey happy ever after plane jane book (nothing wrong with these types). As well as I wanted to get the group to read a book by a non-binary, transgender author. It is important that we read from a diverse selection of writers because this allows us to be opened up to new perspectives, retellings, and creativity. . I really hope you guys enjoy this, I can not what to talk about this, and as always if you have any questions message me!

Ever since watching She's gotta have it on Netflix, my favorite women leads are black artist. It is something about learning thoughts of a right-brained, angsty, woman that fufills me. Ever since watching She's gotta have it on Netflix, my favorite women leads are black artist. It is something about learning thoughts of a right-brained, angsty, woman that fufills me. You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaekw Emezi is a contemporary novel about a grieveing woman named Feyi who is searching to feel alive while slighlty causing a little chaos. This book was extremely sensual even without being full of sex scens. It was also very queer with both main love intrest being bisexual. This was the perfect book to read for my pride month.

I will actually admit this was the best romance I've read this year so far. The thing I enjoyed the most about this story was that the pacing was absolutely perfect. Emezi gave us just enough of each love intrest for us to fall in love with each one of them, and just enough time to move on from them when needed to. And not just Feyi's lovers, but Feyi as well. This people is what I was talking about when I say show us why the love intrest love each other. Feyi was big, beautiful, spirited even when she wasn't, she was a fighter for her life, she made art out of death. She WAS NOT perfect. I mean *Spoiler ahead* fucked the man daddy for God's sake. But atlast, I support women's wrong. Especially since Nasir was fucking homophobic. Feyi did not know what she wanted a lot of times, but when she did she held on to it. And she felt bad for it, felt horrible about it, took accountability for her actions, but then let it go. And I love her for it. I love Emezi for writting her. A real womn with REAL personallity, like GOD I haven't had that in a while. She was a complex woman with complex baggage, complex wants, in a complex story read by another complex woman sipping on complex wine...It's all some ever need.

The tone of the book strayed out for me, the language had too much profanities and I think the author could have done a good book without them. It was like watching a hood movie in terms of language. Then secondly the storyline got twisted and Feyi was now dismissing her friend for the affair with his dad. It just was too much for me and I skipped to the last chapter to get to know the conclusion of the storyline and pack the book. The writing was pretty good, but I fear I simply cannot get past the sticking point that 'going to the ancestral home of the guy you're dating and then fucking his dad' is, in fact, quite a fucked up thing to do. I get that the narrative was all about love after grief, and how sometimes selfishness can be radical, but I dunno, man. None of the grief stuff really hit as hard as I think it was supposed to; Feyi's trauma never felt real, probably because Jonah never felt like a character who existe ...more
