What Members Thought
I adored this novel. The best thing about historical novels is how much I learn about the past. I knew a bit about the Spanish civil war, but had no idea what life was like for ordinary people in the years that followed. Ruta Sepetys creates characters readers can't help but become invested in. I'm sure it can't be easy to do this with so many, but I came to care for almost all of them. I loved the ending.

This book sat on my TBR bookshelf for an embarrassingly long time. The reason (or maybe excuse is a better word) is that I had selected it from Book of the Month way back when without knowing it was a Young Adult title. Young adult tends not to work for me and once I learned about the target audience, my interest waned.
