I really wanted to like this one, after all Alden from Northshire Bookstore recommended it. This book, with it's incredibly short chapters just seemed to trudge along until the last 100 pages. Each chapter has a date and the name of one of the core family (mom, dad, young son). Possibly, part of the slowness was trying to grasp the logging industry - words and concepts that I wasn't familiar with (e.g. crummy as a noun not an adjective).

This is an amazing debut novel that takes you to California in the 70's surrounded by the ancient Redwoods. The Redwoods - a source of livelihood and a source of controversy. Those like Rich Gunderson whose family line depended on the Redwoods to survive. I loved the vivid description of the logging process and what it takes.
