Getting into the book was both easy and difficult. It was easy because it got right down to it. The reader comes in DURING the story; no character building, backstory, or even a location set up! Jump right in with both feet. I like that.

It was difficult because I read this with the thought that here is a new author competing against well established authors (I had no idea she had written so many books at the time I began this one). So I read with a proverbial red pen in my hands. Even at the end Getting into the book was both easy and difficult. It was easy because it got right down to it. It was difficult because I read this with the thought that here is a new author competing against well established authors (I had no idea she had written so many books at the time I began this one). So I read with a proverbial red pen in my hands. Even at the end, choice words left me wondering what the author really intended to say.

HOWEVER, after getting into the second chapter, I found it rather difficult to put the book down! Not unlike dodging a pink blither. The next thing I know the book is done, and I am left with that sudden stopped feeling: my body wants to keep moving in the forward trajectory, but the object that moved me has come to a complete and sudden stop! Thank goodness I got the series in one book!

Things I would change about this book if I could: not a fan of the first person story telling. Especially when the character is complicated and powerful (in every sense of a character, not just in magical abilities). Also, I need a map. It’s hard to imagine the layout of the land, the school, the castle when there is no image to go off of. I found that sometimes a door is where I thought it was but isn’t, and the characters move around an object and that was supposed to be somewhere else. I found the attic particularly frustrating in trying to see where everything was laid in relation to the characters. Minor details like using one hand to grab at the first and closing the fists to crush the leaves. If she only used one hand, how can she use fists? And other such details.

Did these irritants prevent me from enjoying this first book? Pshh! NO. Will these minor details stop me from reading the next book? (Great big eye roll) NO! Is my stomach still hurting from the curses thrown at her? Ugh, YES! (Psst! That’s the sign of a good book! When you feel the physical attacks your character feels!)

The lack of a map and pictures of these places might induce me into long sleepless nights of either finding or creating them myself! An obsession I surely do not have time for! But I’m sure there is a spell for that!😉 ...more

The story is excellent with magic and a bunch of young girls at school you know kinda like Harry Potter. This is a great series for any age that likes to dip into the magical world with villains and curses to overcome. The narrator does and excellent job of making each character come alive. I definitely enjoyed listening to this one while working.
