Changed to 3 stars. Idk why I rated it 5 stars at the beginning but here you go. It's your very average sports romance written which only got popular because it's written by a white author and caters to a white audience.

That was… so good. I became addicted, reading at every chance I got. I loved the flirting and build up of them getting together. I liked how Hannah and Garrett ended up, resolving their issues.
I loved the romance as well. Such a great book. I was weary when everyone was praising it because I expected a cheesy American wattpad style book, but although it was slightly cheesy, and very American, the writing was good and all round a great book.

This was a very fast and easy read which I appreciated! This is the first book in a series centering on the dating lives of a college hockey team and their love interests. This series has come up on my “recommended for you” page on multiple platforms, so I decided to give it a chance when I wasn’t in the mood to read anything.

Let’s start with the parts of the book I liked. Usually with romances, the plot only moves forward through the characters’ relationships. And while this is MINOR SPOILERS:
This was a very fast and easy read which I appreciated! This is the first book in a series centering on the dating lives of a college hockey team and their love interests. This series has come up on my “recommended for you” page on multiple platforms, so I decided to give it a chance when I wasn’t in the mood to read anything.

Let’s start with the parts of the book I liked. Usually with romances, the plot only moves forward through the characters’ relationships. And while this is partially the case for The Deal: Off Campus, the characters’ lives don’t completely revolve around each other. They have other friends, responsibilities, and goals that they focus on. I thought the banter between characters was good — nothing super special or witty — just the classic teasing and throwing each other under the bus. However, there were a few instances where I thought one of the characters pushed the other or said something particularly offensive, and I thought “I definitely would never say that to someone or would allow someone to say that to me.”

Now for the aspects I didn’t love. First and foremost, if you’re considering reading this book please check for TW (rape/sexual assault/domestic abuse). Given that the author chose to focus on SA and abuse, I genuinely think these topics could have been discussed in a better way in these books. While most of these issues were resolved by the end of the book, I still felt that there was a serious taboo on these topics even though they played a big part in the plot and character development. I also didn’t love how much Garret “pursued” Hannah. It was more harassment and bordered on stalking. I understand that he’s trying to get this girl to tutor him, but I think that the premise of the book could have been the same — just with some minor adjustments. Say, Hannah works as a part time tutor in addition to her job to help with tuition and Garret is told by his coach to go see an ACTUAL tutor; while Hannah is unimpressed with Garret she reluctantly tutors him yadda yadda yadda… without there being a definite feel of harassment. I also didn’t love parts of the dialogue — I thought that there were a few parts that were either way to cheesy or far to crass for a (relatively healthy and normal) relationship.

All in all, a fun fast-paced read that will probably get you out of a book slump! Keep in mind, these are my opinions and lots of people absolutely love these books. I say give it a chance, but don’t buy the whole series up front. ...more

Shelves: highschool-college

I am normally not into deals trope but damn this was fascinating. The characters were amazing. I loved reading this and I read this at a stretch. So that’s something. I genuinely liked the plot and that it didn’t have any exaggerated tension and problems. A good read.
