After being majorly disappointed by The Henna Wars, I had tempered my expectations for this one, which was a mistake. I absolutely loved Hani and Ishu (Ishu was my favorite of the two, but it was a very close call) and a lot of my issues with THW (irritating protagonist, a romance that didn't feel romantic, and issues in the friend group that weren't addressed) were either gone or handled much better. The best books are written to a younger version of the author. They know exactly what they – and by extension, kids like them – would have needed and/or wanted to see. Especially when these ideas entwine with OwnVoices representation, every part of the book will simply radiate love, compassion, and determination.

Obviously, that was the motivation of creating this.

Very cute YA romance.

Personally I don’t necessarily enjoy the fake dating trope but despite reading this months ago it is still one of my favourite wlw books! It’s so unique and so calm and wholesome that you can’t be mad at it.
