This sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-chair book talks about Nailer a boy who works for light crew in ship breaking near America’s gulf coast region, were he tears copper wires and scavenges for ship parts for quota. Then from a recent hurricane he finds a fancy clipper and makes the decision between stripping the ship of rescuing a daughter of a big company owner that may lead him to a better life.

First things first I want to say is that this book was absolutely amazing, the author started the book off really interesting. The book starts off with Nailer when he finds a “lucky strike” a room full of oil because oil super scarce, the girl he was working with betrays him but Nailer finds away out and sloth (the girl who betrays him) gets kicked off the light crew team. Nailer lives in a world were loyalty is extremely scarce and anyone will do anything in order to make their daily quota even if that means betraying your partners. Then Nailer finds a fancy clipper ship with only one survivor and decides to save her just in time before his father arrives because his father is extremely violent. The previous part was one of my favorite parts in the story because extremely exciting and every time I closed the book it felt like I was missing out on something big because it was so exciting.

But he was too late and his father finds him and locks him up, then boss girls mom brings a bunch of men from heavy-crew to save Nailer and his friends. This part next part is really interesting because the author vividly explains how Nailer kills his first human being and enriches the emotion that he was feeling was done very well.

When Tool decides to join Nailer, he is put under the pressure of deciding to trust the half-man or not, he then travels to Boston were he has to find a way to make quota every day. Then one day by luck or chance he spots a ship that matched swank girls description and decides to take the risk if he should trust the loyalty of swank girl’s fathers captain or wait until swank girl comes back to make sure that it is her ship but the ship might be gone by then.

Well since I have already explained so much of the book I might as well explain the rest of the book. I felt that the author (Paolo Bacigalupi) had ended the book very well, swank girl ends up being kidnapped by Nailer’s father and must chase him to find Swank girl. He then kills his father, he feels very guilty after killing his father even though his father had abused him all his life after his mother had passed away. He then meets up with swank girl and all that mumbo jumbo. But he leaves the reader with tons of questions. Does Nailer’s dad really die? Does Nailer get his reward? What happened to tool? And so forth. This many questions are good because it will make the reader want to read more and he also has a happy ending.
