I felt invested in Addie’s story right away, but this was a slow burn for me. This story has multiple timelines alternating between early life of Addie and present day Addie. This story is primarily Addie’s but get ready to feel fully invested in Henry’s story. This one really picked up in the second half for me, and I found myself not wanting to put it down. I have a lot of feelings about the ending, but was so impressed by V.E. Schwab’s storytelling ability and beautiful style of writing.

First and foremost, I'd like to thank my most bestest friend and bookish buddy whose name is also Addie, but who I'm pretty sure is NOT Addie LaRue, for recommending this book to me and subsequently putting me through some serious emotional turmoil. My heart knew I'd love this, I guess, because I bought it at a bookstore, which, funny enough, also had a cat that just kinda lived there. I'm so glad I bought it, because that sucker was like $30. Anyway, ummm... Anyway, ummm... I'm not really sure how to talk about this book because it was just an experience. I think it'll stick with me for a good long time. When I'm ninety-four I'll be like "wooow, back in the good old days when I was just a whipper-snapper, I read this awesome book about Satan and life and love and I should totally recommend it to my 100 grandkids because it really changed my life! Then again, kids these days probably wouldn't enjoy this incredibly timeless piece of literature because now books are like VCRs—nobody even knows what they are anymore." JK JK, I shouldn't even joke about that. You get what I mean though. It was unexpected in every way, beautiful to the point of disbelief, and basically earth-shattering. Now I'm gonna wonder if I ever met Addie LaRue, and if we had like a three-hour conversation but I just forgot it. Thanks for that, V.E. Schwab. Anyway, review.

This book is one of those that just has a synopsis that will catch you immediately. A girl, Addie LaRue—I know, surprising—makes a deal with the literal devil. She gets to live forever, or as long as she wants until he gets to have her soul. The one drawback? Every time she leaves somebody's presence, they forget her. And she can't leave a mark. But one day... somebody remembers her. Does that not sound SO GOOD? It is, dear reader. It is.

What do I even say about this book? It's one of those things you can't describe, like the taste of pineapple. You could say it's like a mix between orange and lemon and strawberry but that wouldn't be quite it, because a pineapple is a pineapple and you never really know what it tastes like until you've tried it. That's this book. Weird analogy? Don't blame me, I'm still on a reading high from this book. And my emotions are basically everywhere now.

Have I sold you yet? Are you still debating adding this book to your TBR? Well, my cynical reader friend, I'm here to tell you that you should just add it, and read the first chapter, and if you aren't immediately sucked in... well then, you can scoff at my review and move on with your life. But to the... maybe three people who will see this, add it to your TBR if you haven't read it already. You are totally missing out on an epic story that spans three centuries, in which a very brave girl finds out what it means to really live. ...more

Oh my gosh. That was so good. I feel like I can’t even properly describe this book, but words that come to mind are enchanting and beautiful and bittersweet. It was simultaneously depressing and euphoric, lonely and lovely. The writing was melodic, the plot was woven together so flawlessly, and the characters felt so bright and real. The only complaint I have (which isn’t that big of a deal, and I honestly wouldn’t have noticed if others hadn’t pointed it out) is that Addie stays within Europe a ...more

Very enjoyable, interesting premise. Flashing forward and back in time made it a very compelling read and hard to put down. The writing was pretty, but lacked some of the gravitas it thought it had. Understand they hype, look forward to the movie.
