wow. schwab’s writing never gets old. i know she’s talented, but every time i read a new one of her books i am astonished by the beauty of her words and how they sweep me away from reality and transport me to the colorful worlds she creates. victoria’s characters, as well, are so compelling and drawn out, that i get instantly obsessed with them (both when the obsession is of hatred, & when i’m so in love, i want to kiss the ground they walk on).

this book was no exception! i instantly 3.75 stars**

this book was no exception! i instantly adored addie, and saw a lot of myself in her. i was so interested by the darkness and what he was (cause he’s definitely not human!!). i also heard that this was a romance between addie & the devil so i was rly interested to see how their storyline evolved. and henry!! my baby! i need just a regular contemporary fiction novel of henry & his friends being the weirdos they are.

as for the negatives…
I wasn’t into the flip flopping between past and present for each chapter. i really enjoyed that style of writing in her book, Vicious, but in this one, it just made me feel super disoriented, and then frustrated when i kept getting taken away from the action—or, “action” isn’t really the right word, because literally nothing happened in this book. it felt like the entire book was made up of filler content. the plot structure was basically a hell of a lot of exposition, some rising action, and then immediately a conclusion. and the conclusion was a shitty one at that. it was so anticlimactic and reversed a lot of the things i was starting to like about the story. (LOOKING AT YOU ADDIELUC) like how come they have to end on that note when i was finally starting to really ship them? huh? explain miss schwab!! #notnice

also, i appreciate that henry got to live, because now he appreciates the beauty of life (since he was so close to losing it). but, that was the biggest conflict we got and it got resolved so easily!! i wish she at least spent more time explaining it, rather than just dumping it all into the last chapter or so.

i mean, i still enjoyed the book a lot, but i definitely don’t agree with the extent of hype it gets. (let’s bring that hype to the villains series please !!) ...more

This book is so beautiful. I had a love/hate relationship with almost every chapter being set in a different year, but I mostly loved it. I loved seeing Addies life and her struggles. It made me almost fall in love with her. Every-time she went through a hardship it was like we went through it together. Every happy/proud moment filled my eyes with tears of joy.

Did not expect that and now I’m sitting staring at my wall in blank shock trying not to tear up.

This was a masterpiece. Beautifully written and a truly lovely story. Everyone please read this. I beg you!

ok so this was a wild ride of emotions, i loved the characters so much & honestly just bawled my eyes out, only 4.5 ⭐️ bc it could have been a little shorter i guess, otherwise a masterpiece

I don't think I have words for describing how impeccable and impactful V.E Schwab's narration is. Believe me, the first 100 pages are all you need to get through, the starting is indeed slow but once you cross Part-1, there is no way you can stop yourself from sobbing with each turning page.
And after a certain point, you won't care about the plot, you won't care about the characters, you will find your heart tearing between Addie's ...more
