Oh this book....I can't think of the proper word to descibe it. Beautiful is pretty close. This is my first read by this author and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed her writing. So lyrical and whimsical. Her depiction of the charaters and their lives woven together. There is a lot of jumping around in time and in setting but its done so well you aren't lost or confused. Addie La Rue is a character that I don't feel anyone will ever forget once they've met her. Nor are Henry or Luc. That ending ...more

A stunning story with a protagonist I wanted to ghost. This book is absolutely gorgeous and lyrical. Didn’t catch me the first time I picked it up, but my reread? Oh yes to second chances. Schwab weaves a story that feels both timeless and deeply personal, idk but I felt a lot of heartbreak. And Luc, maybe I really am mostly attracted to red flags but wasn’t he so kyot. The atmosphere? Very mixed feelings after finishing this book. I felt it started really strong, Adeline's story and world was very engaging and the mystery behind her 'curse' really pulled me in. However, I felt until the last 100 pages where things really ramped up the book was really dragging. There was a lot of beautiful linguistic techniques and I loved the inclusion of the art pieces, but I felt some of the characters were very surface-level and I wasn't super invested. Look, this took me longer to read than I care to admit, but in the end, it was definitely worth it. It's kind of a slow book on all fronts (except for the almost insta-love at one point), and very character driven. Whilst I did not love all aspects of this book, the message, or should I say mark, that it leaves behind is something very poignant and extraordinary. This book shows us the importance of words, of art, and of living if n “What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?”

Look, this took me longer to read than I care to admit, but in the end, it was definitely worth it. It's kind of a slow book on all fronts (except for the almost insta-love at one point), and very character driven. Whilst I did not love all aspects of this book, the message, or should I say mark, that it leaves behind is something very poignant and extraordinary. This book shows us the importance of words, of art, and of living if no one really know you or who you are. It asks so many questions of life and death and eternity, and of the importance of being careful what you wish for (once I wished I would get diabetes like my friend, so I could eat dextrosol all the time - do not recommend!).

In my opinion, the meaning and the concept of the story might be even more interesting than the story and the characters themselves. I found Addie's and Henry's relationship to be mostly bland, but I also think that was the point. Addie has lived for 300 years after making a wish to the gods after dark (maybe what Voldemort should have done), and it is so sad, if somewhat vexing, to see how the curse that is laid upon her works in action. I would have liked to read more about her journey throughout the centuries, and maybe seen her character develop a little further. Although, it's not like you can develop that much if the only one who can remember you is the devil. Oh yeah, by the way, Luc is definitely a highlight of this book. That ending had me in a chokehold. His relationship with Addie was, in my opinion, far more interesting to read about than her and Henry's.

This is surprisingly my first W. E. Schwab book, so I didn't really know what I was getting into, but I actually loved the writing style. I understand why her books are so popular. She really has a way with words, and emotion is splattered throughout every page.

The ending left me feeling both conflicted, fulfilled and bereft at the same time, and I have not been able to stop thinking about it since I finished the book. Goddammit. ...more

I am so ashamed that it took me so long to read this book because it was excellent! I went into it knowing the bare bones - that Addie Larue made a deal with essentially death to live forever, but no one will ever remember her and I am so glad that I did. I thought the magic was so interesting and the story so full of life. I loved that it spanned Addie’s whole life and went back and forth between her past and the present timeline she was already in.
