This was not a love story.

At least, I did not perceive it as one. To everyone wondering if this is a romance novel about Lily and Atlas, no, it's not. This is purely Lily's book. Atlas and Ryle were just side characters for me. Everything about this was just so raw, real, and personal, I felt like Lily Bloom represented a lot of women suffering through domestic violence. This was an amazing book. It had me hooked from the first sentence and i'm pretty sure id of finished yesterday, if i didn't feel like i was going to die if i didn't get sleep, cause i was really tired.

This was the first Colleen Hoover book that i've ever bought and read, so it has a speciial place in my heart. I didn't cry at this book, but it was beautiful from start to finish, so I understand why some people may have cried.

CHARACTERS

All of the characters in this book were well written and had This was an amazing book. It had me hooked from the first sentence and i'm pretty sure id of finished yesterday, if i didn't feel like i was going to die if i didn't get sleep, cause i was really tired.

CHARACTERS

All of the characters in this book were well written and had a great personality. My favourite characters are probably Atlas or Alyssa. Their personalities are amazing, and they do what is needed to protect those they care about and give the best advice. Marshall has a great sense of humour, but can also be series. He reminds me a lot of Kenji Kishimoto from the Shatter Me series. Marshall was making loads of jokes throughout this book, but when needed he was also really series, like when Ryle got back from Cambridge and wanted to talk to Lily, but didn't want to hurt her so he asked Marshall and he did it, solely to protect his wife's best friend and his best friends wife. Ryle, is an arse. At the beginning I liked him, but I then started to not like him and by chapter 13/14 I hated him. He reminded me of one of my old friends, in the sense that they are both driven and ambitious, and my old friend wants to be a neurosurgeon. I'm going to repeat this, Ryle is an arse and deserves to die. Lily is too good, and if she was an actual person she would probably be dead because she'd help the wrong person.

PLOT

The plot kept me hooked from the beginning till the end. Not a moment of this book wasn't needed. It has changed my perception of domestic abuse and how it affects people. I'm proud of Lily, for breaking the cycle. I hope that she is happy with Atlas and her daughter.

I can't wait till It starts with us to come out, but until then i'm going to try and read at least 3 of her books. Hopefully I succeed in my target.

I give this book 4.99 stars, the only reason that i didn't give it 5 stars, was because loads of people had told me that i was going to cry but i didn't. Other than that, this book like previously stated, was amazing. ...more

ok wow i finished that whole book in one sitting. i understand why everyone recommends this book. it didn’t make me cry like everyone say it will but that’s probably only because of me.
the story overall is way more then some kind of romance book. it has a lot of lessons a about abuse and how someone is always going through something. showing what lily, her mom, and atlas had to go through gives a lot of insight on how tough these situations are.

I have so many thoughts on this book I don’t even know where to begin but I’ll try my best to summarize. I first heard of this book from tiktok and then one of my teachers was recommending it and mentioned how good it is so I thought I would give it a try. This is my first Colleen Hoover book.

I’m usually a fantasy reader and I love romance in books but it takes a lot for me to be interested in a story without the fantasy element. The first half I was invested which surprised me since I 3.5 stars

I have so many thoughts on this book I don’t even know where to begin but I’ll try my best to summarize. I first heard of this book from tiktok and then one of my teachers was recommending it and mentioned how good it is so I thought I would give it a try. This is my first Colleen Hoover book.

I’m usually a fantasy reader and I love romance in books but it takes a lot for me to be interested in a story without the fantasy element. The first half I was invested which surprised me since I haven’t read anything like this before. I fell for Ryle just like Lily and everyone else.

I didn’t realize this book was about domestic violence which I don’t have a personal trigger for but I feel like it’s important to know before reading, there weren’t any trigger warnings at the beginning of the book.

Personally I couldn’t really relate to any of the characters which is probably part of why my rating is lower. But I was still interested in reading about them none the less.

The second half of the book gave me whiplash with everything happening so quickly. I didn’t like the time jumps and suddenly they’re getting married and Lily’s pregnant?? I was shocked which I guess is supposed to add to the effect of the reader feeling what the main character is going through but it just made her ties to Ryle even more complicated. I think their impulsive marriage would’ve been enough.

I’ve also heard this book described as having some great love story between the two. They do fall rather quickly for each other and Lily changes Ryle into a relationship man but I wasn’t getting any super strong connection between them that would be top tier other worldly like. They had a spark when they first met but it didn’t feel like that when they actually became a couple and that spark I feel like should always be there. It all happened pretty quickly which is usually part of what makes an unexpected love story so good but they didn’t have many interactions, especially with them both working so much. Maybe it was because of the time jumps but it didn’t seem like they were ready for marriage when they decided to get married. It just brushes past by saying it’s been however many months since they started dating and then however long since they were married, not many details.

We also don’t get much of an explanation for Ryle’s actions. I understand he has childhood trauma from his brother but how does that justify hurting someone you love? It never mentions him acting violent towards Alyssa or anyone else for that matter so why Lily when she’s the person he loves most? Was this why he never wanted a relationship before because of his anger issues? I think it would’ve been helpful to have some form of a pov from him to understand his thought process. It compares Ryle to Lily’s father which yes, there are parallels but I don’t think Ryle is to that extent. It truly hurt him what he did to her but doesn’t explain why he did in the first place, does he actually mean to cause harm? I don’t think so but does he just black out and not remember when he’s doing it? I think it mentioned briefly he was in therapy but never elaborated? I would’ve hoped that meant he could show some progress or go to a session with Lily and that it could’ve helped their relationship. Also knowing Ryle can be abusive and easily aggravated, she fully trusts him to later spend time alone with their daughter, that part doesn’t make sense to me. Because of the time jumps it’s hard to tell but if he made any progress with his emotions during that time, it would’ve been a good extra detail to add. I think it would’ve been a good character arch to see some change in him instead of Lily leaving and things just apparently stay the same?

In other news, stan Atlas. His character just proves that your past/childhood doesn’t define you and you can still make your way towards a better future and turn your life around. The sweetest ones can come from a not so sweet family background. I loved him from the beginning and liked the idea of the journals explaining a past timeline. The whole time I was wondering when does he come in? And when he finally does we don’t know much about him. We learn about him mostly through the journals but still don’t know about his past or family. We also don’t get to see what his future with Lily is like. I’m glad the story had a good ending and she ended up with him but I would’ve liked a little peak into their future together.

I think the writing was really well done. We get to see Lily’s thought process on deciding to try and stay just so her daughter won’t have split up parents or do what’s best for herself, which ultimately was best for her daughter too. She realized there’s so much more then simply leaving your abuser. It’s even more confusing and complicated when you love them. I really liked the parallels and symbolism between her parents and her current relationship, her journal entries and the present, and her memories with Atlas and the keepsakes she has now from their time together and why she moved to Boston in the first place.

The story ends up coming full circle where she can be out of an abusive relationship and in a new healthy one while also being able to co-parent her daughter. I’m glad she made the right decision in the end even though it hurt.

Overall this is a heavy and emotional book, yes I did cry lol. I feel like my rating isn’t as high as most who absolutely rave about this book but this is some of my reasoning behind it. If there was just a little more information I feel like it could easily be a 5/5.
