I knew I wanted to read this before the movie came out and while I’m glad I did it was PAINFULLY YA. Lol I believe the movie will be good and the story was good for what it was. Also, if you do this in audio I recommend waiting til the new version is out. The original one is not so good.

bonus points for the tv series that managed to redeem every icky and annoying thing about this book though- I CANNOT wait for season 2!!

However, I ended up watching the tv show when it came out and I fell in love with it. As the final season is out this summer, I wanted to go back and read it and see if my thoughts had changed any.
Turns out, they haven't really. It's been so long I didn't remember what the tv show changed. All the changes for the show IMO were for the better. Steven staying the whole summer. The added arc of Belly's debut at the club 2/25 updated review: So, I initially read this book in 2018 and didn't like it. However, I ended up watching the tv show when it came out and I fell in love with it. As the final season is out this summer, I wanted to go back and read it and see if my thoughts had changed any.
Turns out, they haven't really. It's been so long I didn't remember what the tv show changed. All the changes for the show IMO were for the better. Steven staying the whole summer. The added arc of Belly's debut at the club. Conrad being the only one who knew Suzannah's secret and that being why he was acting up rather than everyone but Belly knowing the secret and it making less sense why Conrad was the only one acting markedly off. Belly and Taylor being actual best friends and not... whatever the hell they were in this book (Taylor is mean to Belly, Belly thinks Taylor is stupid, neither of them seem to enjoy each other's company, and I am just sitting here wondering why either of them bother with each other). Also, Conrad is really the worst in this book. He's so mean to Belly for no reason. Jeremiah is... fine. He's there. Cam is featured SO much more than I remembered or that I think makes sense considering his overall impact.
I do wanna say, this book has great vibes. The setting is magical and Han really makes it feel real and like you're there. That's my favorite part. I also like Belly. She is very realistic in this book - she acts exactly like a teenager, so yes she can be frustrating but I thought it all fit her age.
Also, I listened to the audio narrated by Lola Tung, Belly's voice actress in the tv show. Highly recommend it. Her voice is very soothing but also expressive.
I don't hate this book at all! It's not bad. It's just not also, IMO, very good. I will always adore it for being the reason we have the wonderful TSITP tv show. And I'm going to read the rest of the trilogy to see what happens before the last season airs.

11/18 original review, rating 2 stars: Not a fan. I didn’t like any of the characters. They were blah or annoying. Belly was weird. Jeremiah and Conrad didn’t seem to have much of a personality to me. The story really lagged along, especially in the middle.
