At the time of this writing, there is a plethora of praise for this epic novel and all of it is deserved - Verghese has a way with words and is a seemingly natural (and gifted) storyteller who seamlessly folds pertinent elements of medicine, religion, humanity, art, food, and nature into his tales.

Verghese's storytelling is unaparalleled. He weaves culture, religion, medicine, and family into epic sagas so masterfully that, even after five hundred pages, I'm longing for more of the story to unold. The author created a setting so real that my mind feels that it truly visited 20st-century Kerala in time and space. Character development was phenomenal.
