Yes, Mr. Doerr meanders, and the story took a bit to unfold, but wow what a fun read this was! At the heart of this story is his love letter to books, librarians, and libraries. Reading books engages the mind in a way that transports you to different time periods, as well as different locations. One story transcends time and place. I think that was Anthony Doerr’s intention in his latest, magical novel.

This is a novel for the ages - truly one of the best books I've read this year, if not ever in my lifetime. Doerr deftly weaves the power of stories and storytelling as the link between generations and the human experience - with a backdrop of socio, political and environmental crises and issues that plague mankind then, now and to come. DNF. This was a skip-the-line loan from the library and when my time was up and I was halfway through this book, I realized I didn’t care about any of the characters enough to renew the book (and wait however long for it). Also, I’ve had it with violent white men’s origin stories.
