A Very Large Expanse of Sea is set in 2002 and is about what it is like to be a Muslim girl in America after 9/11. Shirin is a 16 year old girl and is sick of being stereotyped. She meets a boy named Ocean who lives an entirely different life than her, but for some reason wants to hang out with her.
