I will not be able to give this book its justice. What a story! On Jeju Island south of Korea, home of the sea women, the haenyeo, a group of women free dive into the sea to harvest marine life to provide for their families in a matrifocal society. At the heart of the story is a complex friendship between Young-sook and Mi-ja spanning the Japanese Occupation through the Korean War, and their struggle for existence during this period. Our book club LOVED The Island of Sea Women. We had so much to discuss and the book created a lot of research rabbit holes to explore. Readers learned a lot about the time period and the wars that occurred and how Jeju was impacted. And of course, the haenyeo were a totally new cultural aspect as well and we watched some news interviews with Jeju's present day divers.

A beautiful, heartwrenching novel that we couldn't put down!
