This was a wonderful book for me. I love a good gothic story, yet this one had some surprises. First off, the setting in South Africa and the descriptions of their voyage from India and the grounds of the estate were so easy to picture everything and be swept away.

A page-turning gothic novel set in Africa. Told between two timelines, with unexpected love stories, incredible losses, and a touch of the supernatural. Definitely similar to its comparable titles of Rebecca and the The House of Spirits.
I loved the setting and picturing the grounds of the old estate with the garden and the menagerie of animals, and then the inside seemed so shadowy and full of characters who were in pain or longing for a different path in life.
As eerie as it was emotional.
