I loved this "experiment" of a story. Told in a myriad of scenes - be it a news report, a grant application, a dream, an auto accident - the reader learns about a community forced together due to the impending destruction of a wildfire. It represents many viewpoints and realities of natural disasters, but it's written in the most poetic way.

I loved being surprised what direction each chapter break would reveal next, and how it would all layer together.

What a gorgeous, unique, and trailblazing tale about a wildfire and how the people closest to it survive.

This beautiful book is written in vignettes - it's got poetry and prose, newspaper articles, scenes here and there, and yet it all so stunningly paints a picture of a community surrounded by smoke as a wildfire rages around them and forces change to their routines. We see those working in emergency services, firefighters, neighbors who open their doors and lawns for campers when some are for
